I'm editing a  portrait and I condensed the layers of my frequency separation (I think it's called condensing? I pressed shift control alt E)

then I retouched my eyes. It took me an hour.

Then I realised I wanted to go back to my frequency separation to adjust some texture again and it has zero effect. Have I just wasted all that time on my condensed layer? I can't go back?

I'm learning techniques on youtube but I really hate not understanding why thinks don't work/ destructive non destructive and doing things in the right order. I just dont get  it at all

»I pressed shift control alt E«

In english that’s for »Merge Down«.

And the Layers that previously existed separately are obviously not there anymore after merging them, but only the one resulting Layer.

When did you last save?

After an hour of work it seems improbable that meaningful data is available there but have you checked the History Panel?

»Frequency separation« may be less clear than you might think so please explain what exactly you did.

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?
