Hello! I love the video editing capabilities in Photoshop CC. However, I want to be able to color key green screen video footage in Photoshop. Is there a way to do so? Fyi, I know how to do it on a static image. But I want to do it to video footage. And yes, I know you can do it in After Effects. I want to do it in Photoshop. If you can't do it, WHY NOT?

Photoshop CS6 + has basic video editing feature mainly trim splice, transitions and add audio. You can I believe make video  layers smart objects and apply Photoshop's smart filters. Most likely you can crop  the  document canvas size and transform the smart video-layer other Photoshop tools may not be usable on a smart video-layer.  Photoshop does not seem to have any video filters like chroma key masking that would be available in AE.  You would need that masking to be able to layer in a background replacement video. If you want to really do video editing you should use video editing software like Adobe Premier and After Effects not use image editing software that has a basic video editing add-on feature.  Photoshop has tools that enable you to make a chroma key layers mask and refine that mask for a still image. Photoshop does not have a filter or plug-in to automate adding chroma key layer mask.

See if you can get hold of a copy of "Phootshop Channel Chops" book it includes methods and is about the early days of Photoshop which was actually developed with what you're doing in mind

I hope this helps

Neil, the OP asked this question in 2016 and has not signed into the forums since 2019. The response from JJ was marked correct. I've locked this seven-year-old solved thread that somehow got revived.

@jane-e oops, I'll consider my wrist slapped,

it popped up on the right of a forum post (similar posts) and I missed the sate, all the same someone out there might read it and like the idea of reading Photoshop channel chops.

Hi,

Sorry for the late answer. You can indeed color key with some simple adjustment layer and blending tricks. I've made a video to demonstrate: https://youtu.be/cBZiGUaw6CY

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I've come up with a method to do this using some adjustment layer and blending tricks. I've made a video to demonstrate: https://youtu.be/cBZiGUaw6CY

Hope that helps!

Even Premiere Pro has only been able to key from about version CS5, and then not as well as AE.  It's quite a big deal, and highly unlikely to ever be doable with Photoshop.  Then there is the footage you want to key.  You need a robust CODEC to do it really nicely.  I would have thought that H.264 from your DSLR would not have the colour information, but a quick Google says it can be done.

So I don't know what to tell you.  No, Photoshop definitely can't do chroma key, but I imagine there are alternatives to AE that will do it at less cost.

If you can go to After Effects - using AE its really very simple
