Is it possible to make the background in this photo uniform in color?

I'm a newbie to Photoshop and Lightroom and am pretty overwhelmed. There was bright light on the ceiling that was shining on the right side, so the background is uneven in color. I think it would look better if all of it was dark. I don't even know if what I want to do is possible. Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Yes -- You can make a selection of the background by using the Quick Selection Tool and then Fill with whatever color you choose. If you want it to be the same color that's on the left of the document, then use your Eyedropper Tool to select it and choose Edit>Fill.

For a cleaner look, you might want to start off with a Solid color background and then use the type tool and recreate the quote.
