Question

Is there a way to turn off; name group layers popup box?

I have just started using Photoshopp cc after years of CS6. I'm used to creating a new layer and then naming it later on. In CC I get a popup box aking me to name the new group every time I create one. Is there a way of turning off this option and just have the new group without the popup?

Found the solution. I had set my keyboard shortcut to be CMD-G and I was also getting this pop up prompting me to name the layer. So annoying!

Basically the confusion comes from their being two 'Group Layer's. The one I had set the command for was the first one to come up which is under Layer/New>/Group... - it's NOT this one. Instead, keep scrolling down, the one you want is almost at the bottom of the Layer section just above the 'Arrange'. Hope thats clear and helps!

I'm a Windows user. Up until yesterday, when I used the ctrl+G shortcut it grouped my selected layers and then I could go back later and name them but the last two days it triggers the name new group dialog box every time I use the shortcut. I haven't had any new updates in weeks so IDK what caused the change but I can't seem to remedy it through the shortcuts panel either (presumably because the shortcut still works but has only added a new step). Like the OP, it's messing with my flow. I imagine I'll get used to it over time if I have to but I'd definitely prefer it if I didn't have to. It doesn't look like like there was an answer reached on here but wanted to check in since this is the only chat that I've found concerning this particular problem. I was hoping that maybe the OP had figured it out and just not checked back in. Anyway, thanks for your time. Any help would be appreciated!

Check your Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts... menu for Layers CTRL + G

Let’s try from the beginning:

• If you have at least one Layer selected and trigger Layer > Group Layers from the dialog does it work as intended?

• What exactly happens when you try to trigger it via Keyboard Shortcut?

By simply pressing the new group icon at the foot of the layers panel, a new group is added without dialog.

If you hold down the opt/alk key modifier and use the layer panel menu item for "new group..." no dialog is displayed.

I just want to be able to use key commands without having to into panel menus or have to deal with popups, it breaks my flow.

OK, you could install a script and then add a custom keyboard shortcut to it:

try {
    var idmake = stringIDToTypeID( "make" );
    var desc391 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var idnull = stringIDToTypeID( "null" );
        var ref68 = new ActionReference();
        var idlayerSection = stringIDToTypeID( "layerSection" );
        ref68.putClass( idlayerSection );
    desc391.putReference( idnull, ref68 );
    var idlayerSectionStart = stringIDToTypeID( "layerSectionStart" );
    desc391.putInteger( idlayerSectionStart, 33 );
    var idlayerSectionEnd = stringIDToTypeID( "layerSectionEnd" );
    desc391.putInteger( idlayerSectionEnd, 34 );
executeAction( idmake, desc391, DialogModes.NO );
} catch (e) {}

  1. Copy the code text to the clipboard
  2. Open a new blank file in a plain-text editor (not in a word processor)
  3. Paste the code in
  4. Save the text file as .txt
  5. Rename the file extension from .txt to .jsx
  6. Install or browse to the .jsx file to run:

How exactly do you trigger the Group-creation?

Layer > New > Group from Layers or Layer > Group Layers?

in layers palette > new group or new group from layers.  Basically I want to group layers without the popup asking me to name it. It's unecessary and ennoying.

So try Layer > Group Layers (ctrl-G) already.
