when i select all my files and try to automate a photomerge, it says that "photomerge can not merge smart object documents. they will be skipped"
is there a way to go around that? i kinda need that..
No.
If you split Photomerge into its basic components, Auto Align and Auto Blend, neither of them will work on smart objects.
This would make an excellent feature request (the "ideas" subsection of the forum). While smart objects don't allow direct pixel adjustments, all the necessary transform operations are allowed. So in principle it should be possible to do this on smart objects. Not so sure about the blend part, which alters pixel values - but it can't hurt to ask.
