Is there some clever way to use layers, blend modes, etc. to use the color replacement tool nondestructively?

    Duplicate your layer before doing any edits.

    Yeah, technically that would be non-destructive as the original content remains available.

    But (except for opacity/fill) the result lacks maintained edibility.

    Yes unfortunately. Most editing in Photoshop that happens to the actual pixels is destructive. Not an easy way around that beyond duplicating layers or saving copies to disk.

    Adjustment Layers, Layers, Blend Modes, … provide an alternative to the, in my opinion professionally worthless, Tool, but they may necessitate creating fairly accurate Layer Masks.

    But what exactly do you want to achieve? Please post screenshots.
