Question

Issue when I quickly switch between tools

Hello there,

I am a digital painter, I do use a combination of tools like : brushes, erasers, eyedropper, and so on.

I have this issue when I switch tools quickly, it comes back to the latest one.

here is an example :

I paint with the brush. I need a color already on my canvas, so I call the eyedropper (I) click and go back to the brush (B) and immediatly paint a stroke, and it works fine. Thing is, when I try to paint a second stroke the tool immediatly switches back to the eyedropper without me calling for it.

I tried various combination, with eraser, selection tools, brushes, eyedropper and so on, and the problem is everywhere.

When I switch and  use tools in a slower pace, things are fine though. (but I have to think about it and it's really not helping the workflow...)

I have no idea how to fix that.

Things were working fine on Photoshop 21.0.3 (there were other issues though) but from 21.1 this stuff happens.

I tried to calibrate  photoshop perfermances with  preferences and such, but the issue is still there annoying me more and more.

here the Rig :

Windows10

I7 4790K

16GB DDR4 RAM

GTX 1070

SSD

Wacom Intuos 4 (I deactivated windows ink, used PSuser.txt and so on... This stuff needs to be fixed one day also.. right?)

thanks for the help

Why do you switch to the Eyedropper Tool when painting instead of using the alt-key to pick up a color?

It sounds like you might be spring-loading inadvertently.

I do that sometimes. The issue is indeed not happening.

But it happens with other tools as well (selection, eraser, and so on) and no alt thing for that.

And  I need to change my muscle memory and readapt my workflow, and that's not super fun to be honest ^^

(Besides, I've been working that way for 15 years, and I may be lazy not to relearn how to work, but it worked fine until 21.0.3, so why not now? )

oh and, what is  spring-loading ?

Thanks for the answer 🙂

You can roll back if you prefer, just make sure to back-up all your presets before doing that.

But I suspect you might be a tad sloppy and begin using the tool (click-pressing the mouse or pen) while you are still pressing the key on the keyboard, thus spring-loading the new tool instead of selecting it.
