Question

Layer image missing

I'm new to Photoshop and I was making edits to one of my layers that contained an image when it suddenly turned white. I may have accidentally pressed a button or key. I wasn't able to command Z, and I restarted Photoshop thinking it was a temporary edit of some kind, only to open it again and my image still missing. The version history panels were empty. Am I screwed or can I restore the the image with the edits somehow?

It looks like a normal raster layer that has been filled with white.  You might have used Cmd backspace, which fills the layer with the background colour.  Just delete, or turn off the white layer, and your original background will show.

Thank you for your response. I am not referring to the original Background layer but the "Background copy", that contains edits I made to that image. Ther copy of the background image is no longer there and has turned white. Deleting it will delete all of the edits I have made on that layer.

How much history do you have?  The default is 20, but if you have a reasonable amount of RAM, higher is better.  I use 200 states with 64Gb.  But right now, I'd say your only chance is to step back in history.
