Layer Mask option not working in CC 20.0.4

I can create a layer mask, paint it (as I've done for 25 years) and now it will not mask out the layer. It appears to be a computer issue. If I try to edit using "reveal all," I get a pixelated spray that ends up in a solid block instead of a brush pattern. Why is this happening?

Could you please post screenshots taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?

What are the Brush-settings, the Layer-settings, …?

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
