Is this a driver from the laptop manufacturer? (it usually is with laptops)

This has come up on many occasions, and in all of them it's caused by the laptop manufacturer's modified GPU drivers. They often add a "helpful" function to adjust screen brightness based on what is actually on screen, or something similar.

Photoshop/ACR/Bridge/Lr have no way to alter or influence screen brightness in themselves. But these applications use the GPU actively for processing, and can thus trigger latent problems in a way most other applications can't.

Search all your laptop settings, and turn this brightness control off.
