Liquify Brush Losing Control on Mac Desktop

When using the liquify tool in Photoshop 2024 on a Mac running Sonoma 14.1.1, the mouse seems to lose control of the brush.  It moves along on its own and is uncontrolable. If I cancel the liquify and try it again, it seems to work better.  Any ideas?
