Liquify looks like it is working but does not apply changes to my image - Usual solutions are not wo

I see that lots of folks are having problems with this but I have yet to see any solutions posted.

Liquify looks like it is working but does not apply changes to my image. All of the adjustment handles are showing up on the photo around the eyes, nose, mouth, etc. but no matter how much I try to tweak those and also the sliders, nothing ever changes on the image.

A few days ago I saw something about this filter and decided to try it and it actually worked on my system without a problem. I didn't have time then to actually learn how to use it but was impressed. Now I cannot create that moment of nirvana.

I've tried this with several different photos and different kinds of photos. I've tried the "alt key" solution. No joy on any of that. My video card is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080ti that seems to be operating fine. Using the latest version, March 2023, of Photoshop for Windows. The system is an i9, 11th Gen, 11900K with 64 GB of RAM.

I am using a Smart object copy of layer 1 of a bust shot image – so the face fills 80% of the image. Side note: even though I've converted it to a Smart object, if I go to the layers Dropdown menu, I am still offered the choice of converting to a Smart object again – which does not make any sense to me.

Bottom line: since this thing was working a few days ago, my insightful consideration is that I probably screwed something up and that this is a stupid cockpit error – but my 20 years of experience with Photoshop does not seem to be helping me find the error.

Ideas, thoughts, Ouija board interpretations?

Robert

Just to make sure: What are the »Show Backdrop« settings in the Liquify Dialog?

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) and the Liquify Dialog visible?

Side note: even though I've converted it to a Smart object, if I go to the layers Dropdown menu, I am still offered the choice of converting to a Smart object again – which does not make any sense to me.

What is the problem with that option?

A psb can contain Smart Objects so obviously converting a Smart Object to a Smart Object will result in the Smart Object being embedded in another Smart Object (2 levels of embedding, so to speak).

This can become necessary in various situations.

Edit: A simple example where converting a Smart Object to a Smart Object can be necessary is when a Vector Smart Object needs to be warped. Though Vector Smart Objects are naturally a special case.

An example of pixel Smart Objects that may need to be converted to Smart Objects is when one needs to apply Liquify but the Smart Object needs to be moved or the Canvas gets resized later on.

Another can be when Smart Objects need clipping for more convenient transforming/warping later on.

Thanks, I really appreciate your help. I understand what you're saying about a smart object of a smart object and appreciate the explanation.

I've attached a screengrab that I believe shows what you want to see…As I mentioned, all of the control handles are there but nothing happens to the photo when I try to move them – and nothing happens to the photo when I change the sliders. The sliders do update to show the new values but again nothing happens to the photo itself. The perplexing part is that this worked the first time I used it!

If you need to see other information and/or need any additional screengrabs please let me know!

Thanks again,

Robert
