Question

(macOS Monterey) Photoshop Slow accessing data from external drive while in CC using M1 Mac Studio

I am using a new Mac Studio M1 with Monterey OS. All our data is stored on an external drive and I am having real issues when accessing the data. It is very sluggish and can sometime take 30 seconds for the data on the external drive to show up when using Creative Cloud apps. My network connection is fine and been tested by our IT team. They have said it could be an Adobe issue.
For example: in photoshop and want to open up a file, the contents can take from 10-30 seconds to show up. This is constantly happening and not intermittent. All my apps are up to date. The apps always say 'Application not responding'.

The issue was not a problem when using my old imac 27".

I have the same issue. Using my 2014 MBP with an external hard drive in PS was never an issue.  But my newer 2021 MBP M1 chokes and takes forever to load, will often take more than a few seconds to respond using the same setup and external hard drive.

Yes, it will work faster and the sluggishness stops if you move the file locally. But when you're working with hundreds of files a day, it becomes cumbersome to copy them locally and then move them back to the external drive at a later time. Plus, I'm bound to eventually accidentally overwrite a file

Hi there,

Welcome to the Photoshop Community. Let me clarify this for you.

When you open & save to a network or from removable media, many variables affect application performance & stability.

Configurations to server access have layers of permissions for each user on the network.

Try moving some files to the local storage & try opening from the internal drive & let us know how it goes.

Please check this article to learn more & check what other variables can be adjusted: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/networks-removable-media-photoshop.html

I hope this helps,

Thanks!

Thank you for your help. Working from my local drive is fine. Its only when I try to access the files through an external network do I always get the slowness and 'photoshop or Indesign not repsonding'. Is there an issue with Mac Studio and Monterey and working with an external source? I was using my old imac (under an older OS) and this was absolutely fine a month ago until I started using the new mac studio, so I know working and saving remotely is ok. There are other designers using an older OS on imacs and PC's who do not have any issues.
