Question

Main Photo looks like an Alpha channel

Writing this because I've never seen this before and it is messing my finished product. Modding a game graphic for this process.

When I open an exported photo into PS it asks if I want to "Load Transparency as Alpha Channel" and I check the box as normal. I then get a main layer that looks like an Alpha. And the Alpha has the normal lettering (both attached). When I change my photo to what I want it to be, save (with the proper dds save protocols), and re-import that dds into my game the picture shows up as a dark shaded graphic. I can only think that it has something to do with how the main layer of the original photo looks like an Alpha channel save.

First has anyone seen this before and understands what is happening? Second, how would I make my layer look like an Alpha channel? Just trying to see if that would make a difference when I re-import the finished dds into my game. None of the other graphics that I change come out dark shaded like that so I'm trying to understand how that is happening. Any help or if you need further clarification or details, please let me know.

Thanks!!

Try turning off the alpha chanel in that file (or deleting it, if it won't hurt your workflow moving forward) before saving.

Well, tried that and I still get the dark graphic in-game. I saved with no alpha and with a blank alpha and both times I got the same result.

Somehow I can't help but think there is a connection between how that color layer looks and the final product. I've just never seen a color layer look like that before. Nor have I been able to create that look without a blank graphic showing up in-game. I tried copying the Alpha and making it the color layer and that doesn't work either.

A few questions to get some clairiety on your problem:

What format file are you opening?  From which software?  What format are you saving?

It comes out of a program called Frosty and is a dds file that I try to open. The save is with Intel Texture Works saving back to a dds file with BC3 8bpp (linear). I follow the same process from start to finish as all the rest of the saves (attached photo below of the outcome) and I only have issues with two graphics that open up looking like an Alpha and not a layer.

In this one, the commentators box has been modded to reflect the FOX NFL commentators and its all good.
