A client wants a 500x500 pixel ad. I get how for websites you want to make retina images at 2x size (1000x1000) and then code it in to restrain to 500x500 pixels.
But this image is not necessarily going onto a web page. She may just tweet the image or something. So how do I make her a retina friendly image now? If I make it 1x it doesn't look so hot, and if I save down a 2x image to .5x it doesn't look good either.

There's no such thing as "retina ready". If they specify 500 x 500 pixels, make a file at 500 x 500 pixels in Photoshop.
Yes, it will look tiny on a retina screen, which is why web browsers and many viewers scale the file up by a linear factor of 2, when such a high-density screen is detected. So it displays at "normal" size, what people are used to from traditional displays.
But the file is still 500 x 500 pixels!
If you make it at 1000 x 1000, the same web browser scaling happens, so it will be twice what you want.
You need to realize that this web browser upscaling is a workaround, a hack to put it bluntly. It will no longer be necessary when the day comes that we all have high resolution screens. That day, web designers will just start to design with more pixels, and it will display normally without this hack.
