Make a sphere on an old Mac?

I have a 1998 Mac Pro (OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan), which continues to be a workhorse for me. Today, however, I want to make a circular object look like a sphere, and the nifty 3D features in Photoshop CC 2017 simply are not available with my old graphics processor, and I'm not sure I can install a more modern processor -- and don't want to anyway for this one-time need. So... I vaguely recall in PS before CC a means of manipulating light sources to simulate a sphere. Am I right? Can I return to those earlier methods in CC 2017? Thanks!

Hi

You could use a circular shape with a gradient fill, with Align with layer unchecked and the centre of the gradient offset in the circle

Well, of course. Thanks for kick-starting my old brain, Dave.
