Question

Make a teardrop using the smudge tool in Photoshop:

I can make a circular spot on a black background with a brush. I have seen on a video a teardrop shape made by dragging across the spot with the smudge tool. The resultant teardrop is symmetrical, like a triangle. When I try this I get just a white smudge. Any ideas on how to make the smudge tool make a teardrop using this technique?

I have seen Steve Caplin make a convincing explosion effect using the Smudge tool, but like Chuck suggested, the object he is dragging out is on its own layer.  OK, I have found a video.  There is also a useful tip using Fade in a creative way. Definitely worth two minutes of anyone's time.

Thank you for your response to my smudge tool question. I would like to watch the video you mentioned but apparently the link you attached is not active. Could you resend it?

    Thanks

If you're getting white, I would put the black spot on a separate layer, and make sure the smudge brush is set to current layer, if it has that option.
