Mask Tool - Can't Add or Subtract from Mask

In "Select and Mask" I can't add or subtract from the mask. Everything was working perfect until yesterday, and then it started glitching.

If I click "+" or "-" nothing happens on the main mask view. 

On the View Screen (top left) I am able to see the changes, but they do not apply on the main viewing screen. If I create a new layer with layer mask, I am able to see the changes. For example, I used "+" to write HELP on my mask. I am not able to see the changes to the mask in the main viewing screen. If I accept the mask, this is how it looks -
