Match colors in Photoshop

I have the simplest problem. Any solution I've found seems too complicated. I need to match the color of one square on one layer to another square on a different layer. The eyedropper should do this right? It doesn't seem to work, no matter what I try. I suspect I am skipping a step somehow. Help!

Hi there, thanks for the suggestions above. I continue to have the problem with the eyedropper, and it seems it is the same problem experienced by others in the forum. https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop/still-cannot-change-color-of-a-shape-or-stroke/td-p/10419447?page=1 It looks like I need a shape layer, and then can use 'Edit - Fill'. Nevertheless, this solution seems clunky and is not intuitive. It feels like this should be simpler and I'm still only finding the solution after figuring out work arounds.

Without any specific info about your system and your document we can't tell you much. The eyedropper not even working is a huge reason to already be concerned, as it may indicate a botched monitor profile or not correctly configured hardware acceleration. Of course there's always the chance some other layer is simply blocking it, too... either way, you have to do a better job and provide more precise info, ideally supported by a screenshot of the situation.

Here is my interface set up. There are multiple instances of blue squares in my document and they all had to be the same color. I don't understand how the eye dropper is supposed to work as I thought it could read the color in one area and drop it into another area (in this case my highlighted second layer which should be the same blue). There doesn't seem to be a simple solution, but I eventually was able to go to the color picker window and paste in the correct hex code.

I have now run into this problem in multiple ways - I can't copy the color from one text area to another text area using the eyedropper either. Any ideas?

The Eyedropper samples a color into the Foreground Color. You then need to apply this color. For an empty layer, this would just be selecting the layer an pressing Alt+Backspace (Windows, Mac would be similar).
