a recent new update to photoshop made the menu bar pop up whenever i select something, and just gets in the way and is basically annoying. the 'hide bar' option hides it... until the next time i select something. does anyone know how to hide it for good?

It sounds like you are describing the Contextual Task Bar. You can go to menu Window > Contextual taskbar and uncheck it.

Dave, the issue seems to be that the OP hides the bar, but it keeps coming back again

"hide bar' option hides it... until the next time i select something"

I am not in my office right now but IIRC hiding it is not the same as turning it off completely in the Window menu.

Try taking a before and after screen capture of the full screen and upload it here so that we can have a better understanding of the problem.

That's not how it should function. Have you attempted the basic troubleshooting step of resetting preferences for any oddities in Photoshop?
