Question

Merging group changing opacity?

Hey there! Just a quick question.

Why does opacity of certain layers change when I merge a group?

Is this a bug? A feature? Are there workarounds?

Thanks in advance!

@simonight.art

View at 100% magnification when merging, flattening etc.

Hi @simonight.art,

I understand how frustrating it can be to see the opacity change when merging, especially if you’ve carefully adjusted each layer for a specific look. Merging layers and groups with varying opacities in Photoshop can sometimes lead to unexpected results, as it flattens everything to one uniform opacity.

Here is a way to work around this issue:

By converting the group into a Smart Object, you can keep each layer’s opacity and blending effect intact, preserving the transparency while keeping it editable.

I hope this suggestion helps you maintain transparency just as you need it. Let me know if there’s anything else I can clarify or assist with!

Best,

Hi @Anshul_Saini Thanks for your reply!

Sadly, when I convert the group into a smart object, the opacity etc. is still effected, just as if I would have rasterized it...
