Question

Merging Layers Increases Brightness

Hi folks,

I noticed a really annoying bug in Photoshop 2020 on Windows 10 Build 1903. While doing my beauty retouch with the frequency separation method and merging the layers together with the ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+E shortcut, the new layer has a slight increase of brightness which is a no go in my workflow. The difference can be seen best on black color.

I am working on a 16bit image in RGB mode. Changing the images to 8bit and merging the layers does not change the brightness of the new layer or at least the difference is not noticable.

Did somebody notice the same behavior?

Regards,

Roland

Can you show two screenshots one immediately before and one immediately after merging with the screen at 100% zoom and including the layers panel.

In that case try going to Preferences - Performance and check Use legacy compositing.

I tried merging with legacy compositing enabled which didn't work.

Hi

Make sure you are checking before and after the merge at 100% zoom. The reason is that at zoom levels below 66.7% , Photoshop blends the on screen image previews using 8 bit previews (even on 16 bit images) but of course the merge will use the full bit depth.

Hi Dave,

unfortunately that didn't work. Same behavior like when doing the merge below 100%.
