Question

Missing 'paste as' dialog box

When I paste things into photoshop, the usual 'paste as' dialog box which allows you to select smart object, pixels etc has disapeared and the image is immediately pasted as a raster. I've had this problem since updating my OS. I have reset my preferences in Photoshop but that doesn't work. Who can help me solve this problem?

That sound like you usually paste in from an Adobe application like AI.  If you use Paste in Photoshop to Paste in the Clipboart Ctrl+V there is no  dialog box a new Layer containing the clipboard content is added above Photoshop  current layer and this new layer becomes Photoshop current active layer target. I do not install AI I never see a "paste as" dialog.  In Photoshop I have to Place embedded AI vector files as vector smart object layers.

Yes that's right, I paste from AI. But problem has been solved. I reset my computer and that seemed to do the trick.

What did you copy?

Could you please post meaningful screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?
