Question

Move tool always selects the topmost text layer!

I'm experiencing a strange issue where when I try to "auto" select a layer it will only ever select the topmost visible text layer. I could be trying to clicking on a layer that is nowhere near the topmost text layer, but it will still only ever select that layer.

I typically use the Command-Click trick to select a layer, but I tried with Auto Select / Layer checked and experience the same issue.

I tried resetting the tool to no avail.

It only happens in certain files. In other files, everything works as expected.

I even tried opening the file on a completely different computer. Same issue.

Any ideas?

Not sure adding a scratch disk would resolve this, as you mentioned this happened on another computer, and this appears to attach itself to specific files.

What font is being used when the issue occurs? Might be a font with a very large amount of white space above or below as in many script fonts or poorly programmed fonts?

I'm not sure how, but the problem seems to have been related to my scratch disk. It was getting full, so I added a second scratch disk and now suddenly things seem to be right with the world again. Strange.

I agree that Auto-Select might be the cause. Because many of my illo files have tons of layers, I use Auto-Select a lot, so the best thing for me to do while working is to uncheck any text layers until the end because that thing will select a text layer before going to any other one.

Is the text in a text box with text at the top and bottom but filled with spaces or carriage returns between? That would autoselect as you describe. Other than that I can't replicate it here.

That's how it would with me.  I never had that problem except when I'm using text boxes like that

I always had that problem when auto select is checked.  which was why I never used auto select
