Moving selected image to existing layer

I have searched the internet for an answer to my problem and can't find help. I am trying to move an image selection from one layer to an EXISTING layer. I have selected the object with both the marquee tool and the lasso tool. I go to EDIT on the top tool bar, then push COPY, highlight the layer I want to move it to, and then push PASTE. I've also tried PASTE IN PLACE. Every time, it copies the image to a NEW layer. I want it in an EXISTING layer. Please help.

One thing you can do is use the Merge Down command to merge the two layers together, assuming the one layer is on top of the other. The keyboard shortcut is Cmd+E (Ctrl+E on Windows) or use the Layers panel menu. You can also multiple select both layers and Merge Selected.

Thanks. It seems like you should be able to paste/place it where you want on an existing layer. This will work though

As Jane mentioned, you have to merge the layer after you move it. There is no function to paste it into an existing layer.
