Question

Multiple layers image sizes

Not even sure if I can explain this properly, but I have been trying to work with mulitple layers from three photos uploaded as a "stack."

The goal is to utilize a mask to insert one image into another (and not sure how to do this with three images but whatever)

These photos are different dimensions (portrait versus landscape) and when I try to resize one by isolating the layer and using the free transform tool, the others get cut off.  I am having a terrible time with this.  I have tried resizing thecanvas.  This does not help at all.

I am also wondering what is up with the canvas being centered in the midst of a sea of blue.  How to make this stop!!! I wish it would stay in the upper left corner so I do not have to chase it all over the page.   I must be doing something horribly wrong....or going about it in the wrong way.

Is there some tutorial that will show the right way to do this.  Every so often I stumble across the thing I tried to do, but when you spend four hours crashing around like a bull in a chinashop, it is hard to isolate the one right thing you did.

Free Transform should only effect one layer if one layer is targeted and there are no layer linked to it. Other  layers may look like that are being transformed  because of layer overlap in the layer stack. Upper layers pixels hid lower layers pixels in normal blend mode.  Layer mask cal alsi come into playe thet can be linked or not linked.  Mask not linked will constrain where the layer pixels can be visible. Constrain an image into a framed areas.

I am not sure, but I don't think they were linked.  Is it possible that after importing as a stack, that this would be the default?  I will go back and check however.

Basically, assume the top layer is portrait sized and the one below it is landscaped.  You want to apply a mask to the top layer to reveal the one below.  But perhaps the one below is too large and you want to shrink it to fit the area where you want to place the mask.  That is what I was trying to do after watching the tutorial in which this was accomplished.  The only difference is that there was no resizing necessary in the example.

When I try it, the bottom landscape layer is cut off on the side.  Perhaps that is just the way it is....ie. both top and bottom must be the right size before uploading.

If you use menu File>Scripts>Load Files into a Stack to stack your images.   Use menu Image>Canvas Size and expand the canvas 100% width and height relative.  Then move image layers around the canvas and transform to size them.  Convert the image layers to smart object layers before doing any transforms.

Hi Martin

Let's try and get you sorted.

Could you check that the layers are not linked?

A linked chain icon will appear alongside the name of the layers. It is on the far right of the layer name.

You can unlink the layers by right-clicking this icon and choosing unlink layers or by cliccking on the link layers icon off the bottom of the panel.
