My saved progress seems to have disappeared.

I was working on an illustration in photoshop and I saved my progress every few minutes. After something popped up on the screen and photoshop closed for some reason, I reopened it. When I opened photoshop and opened up the peice I had been working on, all of my progress had been lost, and it was set at a much much earlier save point.

 

Does anyone know if its possible for me to retrieve my saved progress? I don't understand why it would go missing since it had been saved several times.

One possible explanation would be a user error in that you might at some point have inadvertently gone back in the History before saving – because the saved files on disk should not be affected by a Photoshop crash (ever noticed those temporary files that disappear when the saving is complete?).

Could you have been working on a second copy of the file? Did you search your computer and connected disks for the file’s name? Also the files listed under File > Open Recent > …? 

 

What does »something popped up on the screen« mean exactly – what did the message convey?

I didn't get a chance to read the message, it looked like the option to save my progress before exiting out, but I only caught a glipse before it shut down. And I don't believe I went back in history because I was still working on it when this happened, so I would have noticed the changes in my peice before it exited out. Also it was in Open Recent, but it was much lower on the list then it should have been, considering it was the most recent file I was working on. It was as if I hadn't even opened it since I first started it.

Photoshop employs a »safe save«, meaning the original file is only removed when the new file has been written, but as you have saved reeatedly the original file should have been removed a while back. 

What is the change date of the file?
