Need help with layers.

Hi! I don`t use Photoshoop alot these days but needed to use it recently and ran into a problem. Whenever I do anything on photoshop (pen, shape tool, etc...) it automatically create a new layer and that layer appears in halftones. I can`t figure out how to change this and it really makes it hard to work. 

Please help me!
