Need help with moving layer over.

I had this design made. I am trying to create this:

I have the background here:

Now I want to move everything from this area I have down below and move it onto the background. When I close the background on this file, where the stars are these weird black squares everywhere:

If I make them invisible then all the stars are gone too. What are they and is there any way to fix this?
