need how-to for muting or lightening an image

Hi. I am custom making gift certificates for my business, and I am very photo-shop illiterate. I need to take an image (photo) and lighten it, soften it, mute it...whatver you want to call it....to have as the background on the certificate, so that the text is very visible. How do I do this?
