Question

New computer keywords, copy and paste possible?

I have to do a clean  Windows installation on a new computer so Photoshop and Lightroom must be reinstalled.  I will be using the same operating system, just new hardware.

I have an extensive list of keywords in Photoshop.  I understand that they are stored as .xml.  I have found the Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml  for Bridge 2024 on my computer.  Could I just copy this folder to an external drive, and then paste it to the correct location with the new Photoshop 2024 installation?

I also have a couple of scripts which I will have to reinstall, and I have successfully done a copy and paste for them in the past.  I have done this frequently with plug-ins.  I will be saving them on an external drive so they can be transferred to the new computer.

I have read about the export and import function for keywords , but there seems to be a problem sometimes so I thought I would check on the copy and paste option.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

I believe that Photoshop keywords entered in File > File Info are different and separate to the Adonbe Bridge keywords file. They both populate keywords but that's where the similarities end.

For the Bridge keywords, do both. Export the keywords panel to plain text and also make a copy of the XML file. That way you have two options!

Ensure that your Bridge keywords preferences are set the same on the new PC.

I have another question.  I have saved information in the metadata pane which I can see in the File Info.  I can see this: Adobe Bridge Metadata Preferences. abdata.  Is this someting I should copy and paste to the new computer?  What about the AdobeBridgeOpenerPreferences.xml?  Should I do something with this?

I have done the export keywords.  Is this question really the same as the XML file (Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml)?

I have set up a basic metada "action" under Tools.

Is all this information stored with the image?

Thanks for your help.  All this is very confusing.

I have no idea about these files you mention. Photoshop and Bridge are different apps. I am not aware of the location where Photoshop File > File Info auto-complete entries are stored.

Exporting the keywords to .txt file from Bridge's keywords is the way to backup or migrate these assets. When you import this text file on the new installation, it will automatically create the correct XML file and content from the plain text file.

Metadata such as keywords are written to the file (if it supports such metadata).

However, the "library" of keywords may exist in Photoshop File > File Info as auto-complete entries, or in Bridge's Keywords panel.

Bridge will display file-level keywords that don't exist in the Keywords panel under "Other Keywords" in italic, you would right click on such keywords and make them persistent to add them as a permanent entry in the Keywords panel.
