New Fill Layer Not Working

Suddenly the Layer>New Fill Layer feature of Photoshop stopped working with Shapes. The fill sort of leaks through the Shape boundary to cover all the canvas. It still works with the marquees and lassos though.

Has anyone encountered this issue and solved it please?

Thank you.

Your reply made me check the procedure that I was following and realised that I was missing the Make Selection... feature.

I tested it out with an older version of PS and the Beta version. There was no difference in how it reacted. If I created a shape layer (not just a path) and used the fill, but left "Clip to previous Layer" unchecked, it would do as you showed. If I clicked the check box to clip, it would will the shape. If I drew a path, and not a shape layer, then the fill would fill that path, and I wouldn't have to check the clip box.

Until yesterday, I used the pen tool to create the shape and then the Layer>New Fill Layer command to obtain the semi-transparent fill. It worked very well, and it was fast.

I am now creating the shape with the pen tool, duplicate the shape layer and fill one of the two layers, and then use the Blending Options to obtain the required opacity in the filled shape. This said, I would liket to go back to the system I used till yesterday.

The fact that you have been able to do this before has me confused. What it looks like is you've added a new solid color fill layer above your shape. Normally, I would create the shape with the pen tool, as a shape layer, the use the fill icon in the menu bar to fill the shape with color. For a partial transparent fill, I would lower the opacity or fill opacity of the layer. Is that what you're doing? What steps do you take to fill the shape?

The above screen shot shows a shape which I tried to fill with a semi-transparent layer of the same colour. I use this feature often and never had any problems until today. I have uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop, but the problem persists. I am using v24. I installed the previous version and had the same problem.

Can you post a screen shot of the shape that this is happening to?
