New Gradient tool not working as stated

With the new gradient tool the white diamond that you are supposed to be able to use to adjust the gradient after drawing it has no effect and it's only working as the old gradient tool. See pictures below. The black is a gradient over a red layer. No matter where I slide the white diamond it has zero effect.
