New layer in Photoshop has no pixel

Help! I don't know why or what I accidentally have done, the new layers that I created has no pixel.

I am quite new to PS, I was learning about some masking function and suddenly I realised that the new layers were transparent. How to return it to the default white layer?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Soo

    Correct answer Norman Sanders

If you are referring to opening a new file (File > New) change the Background Contents field to White.

If you are referring to the symbol to the left of the Trash at the bottom of the Layers panel, adding a Transparent layer is normal.

If the current layer is white (or has information of some kind), to duplicate it on a new layer Cmd+J will do that.

Thanks, Melissa and Norman, for kindly reply to my noobie question! I tried again working following my usual steps in creating transparency background for images, it worked out fine even if the new layer is transparent when first created. I must have remembered wrongly.

So sorry, a PS newbie like me is confused with just everything in PS.

Thanks again for taking time to answer my question.

    Cheers.

Do you have a background layer that is white turned on?? Layers are transparent. You see through them. To see white, you need a white layer at the bottom of the stack - like the background layer.

Yes, this is what I see currently. There is an existing background with white. Whenever i created a new layer, it is transparent. Just like in the photo.

Before this incident, I was doing a lot of creating transparent background for images. i remember new layers were shown as white in the layer list, and not with checked boxes. (Unless I remembered it wrongly!) Because back then the added new layers were white, and on a new layer I was able to add a background color (by using CTRL+Backspace key). I can't do that now as there's no pixel in the layer at all.

i suspect I messed up some default settings yesterday while I was practising masking and coloring.

Thank you for answering, Norman. I remember that previously the new layers I created were white all the time. This is the first time I see that new layers created are in white. I must have clicked or adjusted something by mistake, which I don't know. Anyway, I will try your suggestion of copying the existing background layer that is in white. Hope it will work for the task that I need to do.

    Thanks so much!!

Sorry, I meant this is the first time I see new layers created being transparent.
