New Tablet New Problems

So, I've recently joined in with the CS6 party and things have been swell. Today I got a new Monoprice tablet as I've always had lovely luck with them and Photoshop immediately balks at it, aka no pressure sensitivity, at all. I had been using an older Monoprice prior to it, no installation disc, just hooked it up and went off a'drawing.

So the new one comes in and I set it up as am told to, plug it in, installed the drivers, opened photoshop, spent five hours researching, reloading, restarting, trying to figure out absolutely anything that would help in the process. And of course, old tablet worked fine and then I did something and now neither of them work - but just in Photoshop, the computer registers them, I'm able to use pen sensitivity in other programs, etc.

I tried doing the PS 32bit fix, tried reinstalling, tried uninstalling (both the drivers and the photoshop), changing pens, changing nibs... everything.

Put photoshop on a different computer just to test it and pressure sensitivity doesn't work there either. :c

Needless to say, I'm frustrated beyond reason and exhausted trying to figure out what the problem is.

Can you get an older driver for the new tablet?  Prior to CC2014 Photoshop used a different API (Interface) so it is possible that the driver for the new tablet is set up to use the new API.  An older driver would use the older API.  CC2014 was released in June 2014, so try and find a driver that predates that.

With Wacom tablets we talk about Windows Ink, and WinTab.  I believe that the WinTab API works better with Windows 8.1 and 10.  We have had similar conversations with non Wacom users here, but the problem is we don't have experience with them.  Only what feedback we hear from other users, and I suspect that they don't always find an answer.

Out of interest, if you have not already used your trial version of Photoshop CC, register an account, and install CC2017.  If my total guess theory is right, your tablet might well work with CC2017.

We also suggest that MonoPrice, and other non Wacom users, look for an extended user base to stand a better chance of finding an answer.  My only thought in that respect is Amazon.  This page, for instance, has 98 user reviews, and 22 answered questions (as I type this).

If you would like to continue with this thread, we need to know your operating system, and exact model of your tablet.  Also driver version, and steps already taken.

I'm running CC2017, have the Monoprice 8x6 tablet - incredibly basic, no issues before this whatsoever.

I appreciate the link to the Amazon Q&A as they did suggest a driver though it is one of the more outdated ones that came with the tablet.

My operating system is Windows 10, I've tried the Windows Ink suggestion. I've done pretty much everything that was listed on the first couple of pages in my google research. I spent hours troubleshooting every aspect of this that I could, ending in a complete system wipe and reboot in hopes that maybe, just maybe somewhere in that mess was something silly. But again, I sampled the same tablet on a different computer with CC2017 and had the exact same issue. Used the tablet on an old laptop with a copy of CS5 and it's just fine.

You said you were running CS6 in your first post.  That is different, but what I said about CC2014 and later comes into effect.  Unfortunately, I know nothing about MonoPrice products, other than we see a lot of posts on this forum from people who can't get them to work with Photoshop.

OK, I have found a user guide, but I don't know if it is for your actual model.

Did you follow the advice and not attach the tablet until you had installed the driver?  This is to stop Windows making an arbitrary choice and installing a generic driver.

I have skimmed through the user guide, and there is no mention of alternative APIs.  In a Wacom tablet with the Windows driver, there is a check box to use Windows Ink.  If you disable Windows Ink, you have to enable an alternative API that being WinTab.  that is done by placing a short script in a text file as outlined on this page:

You can prove that your issue is related to the Windows Ink API by installing an earlier version of Photoshop.  Open the Application Manage to the Apps tab, and use the drop down and select View Previous versions

Then scroll down to find Photoshop below the Additional Apps line, and click on the drop down to the right of Install.  Install either CC or CS6  Either of those use the older API, and if pressure sensitivity works, you'll know what the issue is.

Follow the advice on the Help link I gave you, and please come back and let us know how you get on.  We'd like to know whether your outcome is positive or otherwise, for the sake of the next person who asks about non Wacom tablets.
