No Pixels Detected - making a selection from a path

This is driving me crazy. When I select more than one path then right click and  "make a selection", I get a message saysing no pixels were detected and no selection is made. However if I select one path at at time it works fine. Going one path at a time is way too time consuming. Anyone know why I'm getting this error? I've never had this problem before. Thanks in advance
