Question

Noise and grains in Sony Alpha 1 images

hello, i have a sony alpha 1 and i shoot product images. When i open these images in photoshop, there is a lot of grain that i notice. Now this is a 50 mp Flagship camera so i was hoping this wouldn't happen infact i was much happier with the canon 5d mark iii in comparison. Also this issue resolves when i use the AI Noise reduction plugin, however that takes a lot of time and also creates a separate file.
please help, thanks!

If you were capturing photos as camera raw files with both the Sony and Canon, using the same exposure settings, then one thing that could be different is the default import settings for each camera. Because otherwise, all things being equal, the Sony noise performance should be as good or better. Is it possible for you to attach a sample file from each camera, like a typical Canon 5D raw file that looks good, and a typical Sony Alpha raw file that looks bad?

A raw file is just a data dump from the camera sensor. Any noise you see is in the file from the camera. ACR doesn't "invent" noise by itself!

The rest is down to what noise reduction is performed in the processing. Camera-processed jpegs usually have very aggressive noise reduction applied. You can do that too if you prefer, but ACR's default settings are conservative. You're supposed to do it yourself.

The new AI-powered denoise is very effective, but normally there's no reason to go that far. Standard manual noise reduction (still very much available!) is plenty effective enough to deal with "normal" noise levels. Denoise is really for the extreme cases shot under particularly impossible conditions, where you need to push ISO to 10 000 or above.

I use several a7r-series cameras (iii-iv-v), and these sensors generally have very low noise levels.

Hey, @bhavesh6C1C. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll clarify this for you.

What version of Photoshop & the operating system are you working on? Are you shooting & working with JPEG or ARW (RAW) images?

This is an expected outcome when you intend to work with RAW images. They're not supposed to be pre-processed or denoised before you start editing, giving you more directions to drive your edit. Additionally, most cameras' high iso outputs are expected to be noisy. Try lowering the ISO & take some sample shots.

If you decide to work with JPEG, they'll be pre-processed and might feel less noisy from the get-go, but JPEG will lack in overall details.

Take your time to denoise & sharpening to deal with the noise. Instead of using 3rd party plugins, give Ai-Denoise a try in the Camera Raw itself: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/whats-new/2023-3.html

Let me know if this helps. Thanks!
