Question

non-destructive transparancy

Hello,

I have a background with square boxes on top, each a seperated layer and 12 roman numbers, also different layers each. The numbers are arranged ad random on the solid colored background. On some places the numbers are completly behind a box, on other places the numbers are only for a part behind one of the boxes. I would like the make the boxes and numbers interact on a way that

 - where the number is behind the box, the box is transparant (only where the number is, not the whole box)

- where the number is in front of the box, there is no transparancy

- where the number is only half behind the box, there is only transparancy for the part that is behind the box.

I have already done something similar with a bigger picture so I know how to work with selection and mask to make something partially transparant but what I am extually looking here is the following:

Can I do something to let the layers interact so that when I move a number, the transparanty moves with it? Some kind of a setting that I can use on a layer so it uses transparancy on just a part of the other layer?

An alternative method is to put the text into a group then use the Blend If sliders in Blending options to get the transparency on the lighter areas only. Hold down Alt to split the sliders and adjust the transparency balance between the dark and light areas.

All elements can be moved independently

If I understand you right - it may be I would do something like that:

Text layers can still be edited and moved - the area and the strength of the opacity are defined by the layer mask of the group.

Hello,

I am sorry for my late answer, something come up and I haven't been able to continuing with this.

This is not really what I was looking for. With the opacity the whole layer get transparant and not only the part where there is an object behind. I think that what I want is not possible... I am looking for an interaction between 2 layers, that create a transparancy only where there is an object behind. So that the rectangle keeps it original settings and opacity, but there are objects behind the rectangle that I want to be visible but it should be obvious that they are behind the rectangle.

Beside this, I want it to be possible to move around with the objects, and keep the transparancy there were the object comes.

In my previous example, I have put an object half behind the rectangle. Than I selected the part of the object that is behind the rectangle, made a copy, made just that part transparant,... a whole lot of work. It has a nice result, only I can not move the objects because than I have to do everything again for the new position. And THAT is what I do not want. I want to have the freedom to move around, change the layout, ... to be non destructive.

If you want to move two layers together at the same time when only selecting one of the layers, you could select them both in the Layers panel, right-click, and select Link Layers.

Look in the Blending Options for the layer (in the Layer Style dialog box), and check out the Advanced Blending section.

I'm having trouble picturing what you're describing (adding a picture can help).

You might want to look into using a clipping mask:

this is a photo to show you what I mean. Now the X is on top of all the layers. I want to be able to see the x true the light blue box, like the x is behind the box without making the whole box transparant. On the photo below I have done something like that with a bigger picture.

But when I move the compass, the transparancy does not follow. Than this is the result. The part of the rectangle where the compass was before, stay transparant becaus that is how I done this for this picture. But on the now place where I put the compass, there is no transparancy because I put the transparancy on the rectangle.

My question is (for the letter X), can I use transparancy on a surtain way on the X, so that when the letter is partially behind a rectangle, you can see the letter true the rectangle without making the whole rectangle transparant? BUT if I move the X, the transparancy follows? SO if it stays on it's place, I know how tho fix it. But I want to be able to move around with the letters to adjust if I make changes to the design.
