Sure it will however if the active document has layers you can no longer use "Save as"  alone you need  to use its "Save a Copy..." button or just use Photoshop new file menu item "Save a Copy" and  you may have to remove  " copy" from the file name.

Its not OK in my opinion to force versions on to users.  User want to be able to update/replace their current image file. They do not want  to saturate their storage with versions the will never be used.
