Question

OK box missing from 2020 adjustment panel

I am a new user of Photoshop; just beginning my journey.  The tutorial on adjustments - brightness panel shows a "OK" box in upper rt corner.  In version 21.1.1 it is missing.  How do I terminate the adjustment.  Will the same technique work throughout Photoshop?

Thanks in advance

I hope this doesn't further confuse the issue, but i wanted to add that newer versions of photoshop such as 2020 can use Image>Adjustments as Smart Filters that enable most of those adjustments to be "non destructive" similar to Adjustment layers.

Just right click on a layer in the Layers panel. click Convert to Smart Object, then go to Image>Adjustments and use whatever adjust is available (more than one can be used).

To change (edit) the adjustment, double click on the Name of the adjustment in the layers panel.

Hi

  • If you choose Brightness / Contrast from the Adjustments panel menu, you will get an OK box to accept the new layer, name, mode, and opacity before it creates the layer.
  • If you choose it from the icon,  the layer is created with default settings.

In either case, use the Properties panel to make adjustments. You may be looking at a very old tutorial if you see something different. If you need clarification, show a screen shot.

Thanks Jane

It took a while but I think I have it figured out.  If I select Adjustments- Brightness/Contrast from the Image Menu; the changes will be made on the background layer with default settings.  If I choose the Brightness/Contrast panel; the change will be made on a seperate Brightness/Contrast layer.  (This is a little different from what I think you said.  I may not know the correct terminology.)   It looks like I have more options and control if I chose the icon from the adjustment panel.

Thanks again

Hi

I did not go to the Image menu, as that is destructive editing and using the Panel is non-destructive. There is a slight difference in using the icon or the panel menu (both in the Adjustments panel) in that using the menu has an OK button, and that is what you were looking for. The OK button is actually to create the layer, though.

If your tutorial says to go to the Image menu, I would suggest using the Adjustments panel instead, and adjust the settings in the Properties panel that will open automatically.

In any event, don't worry about not seeing the OK button in 2020!
