Question

Old Time User [Is it worth it for a PS 5.5 user to upgrade to CC?]

I have been using PS 5.5 for years and have never upgraded.  It is worth moving up to the CC version and what are the benefits of latest version of PS and using the CC with the monthly fee?

Chances are if the machine you are using supports CS5.5 then it would not be sufficient to support CC.. but you can check to be sure. Adobe Creative Cloud system requirements

There are two types of monthly fees...

    1) Full year subscription paid monthly - early termination results in penalty of 1/2 the remaining year's subscription cost

    2) Month to month subscription paid monthly - 1 and a half times the cost of the full year subscription - can cancel anytime without penalty fee

If your question is specific to Photoshop CC you should ask about its benefits over CS5.5 in the Photoshop forum where product users are plentiful.

My system is running Win 10 Version4790 with a i7-4790 processor, 12 GB of RAM.  I have IE 11, Google Chrome 66.0.3359.184 and Firefox Quantum Version 63.

New and enhanced features | Latest release of Photoshop CC

but if ps5.5 does everything you need and it's still working on your computer, you need not upgrade.  the big issue for you will be if you replace your computer.  you're likely to find your new computer's os is not compatible with ps 5.5

PS5.5 does what I want, but I am wondering if the latest version will give me more, which I am sure it will.  As for my system the OS is Win 10 version 1803, IE11.  I listed more in the post below.

your os is not compatible with ps 5.5, but windows is still pretty good at working with older programs.  and you can use compatibility mode to re-install, if that's necessary.

and yes, the latest ps does much more.  read the message 1 link to get an idea of how much more.

to get a full understanding you should google the new features for each version after 5.5:  cs6, cc, cc 2014, cc 2015, cc 2015.5, cc2016, cc 2017 and cc 2018.  that's quite a bit of reading and quite a few new features.

and there'a a one week free trial you can use to see if it's worthwhile for you.  install the cc desktop app from here https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud and use it to install your adobe subscription and trial programs.
