open and keep multiple raw files

Hello. I opened a number of raw files (film strip right hand), worked them, and opened the first one (as a copy). Obviously I expected the others to remain in the back for opening. But they seem to have disappeared. I can't imagine photoshop will eliminate my work without even asking, so where have they gone? Thanks a lot, really

Hello again

Yes, the NEF-file opens in the Camera Raw dialogue that's part of PS. I opened a number of images into that dialogue simultaneously, they presented themselves in a strip in the left side of the window.

To proceed, I chose “open copy” (option key provides that option). Upon doing so, the image chosen within the RAW-dialogue opened in PS as regular, but all the other ones I had woked on in that RAW-dialogue disappeared. Obviously normally working in PS-RAW produces xml (or xmp?) files, but this time it did not, none, neither of the one I then opened (as a copy) into PS, nor of the others.

Hi!

If you only had the one file selected when you hit Open as Copy, then that is the only image that was changed when the file was opened. If the others were not selected when you did that, then Camera Raw interepreted it as you didn't want to save any of the changes to those unselected images. Unfortunately, all of hte changes that you made on the other files were not applied.

If you want to save the changes to all but not open any of the images, then you should hit the Done button and all of the changes will be applied, or Select all of the images and hit Open as Copy.

And, thanks for reminding me of the Open as Copy change to the Open button!

Hi! How are you opening the files--in Photoshop or Lightroom? If you look on the desktop, in the folder where you downloaded your images to--they should still be there. Photoshop does not delete your images.

It sounds like from your description that you opened them from Lightroom. Opening as a copy is something that Lightroom does, not Photoshop. If so, then you might want to switch over to the Lightroom forum.

If you did open in Photoshop, then please send us a screen shot of what your workspace window looks like, and we'll be happy to help further.

Hello, thanks for your reply!

I open them in Photoshop (I don’t have Lightroom). The images (NEF-files, to be precise) are still there, but the work I've done on them seems lost.

Thanks for your response! So the files are still there--that's good! When you open the NEF file in Photoshop, it automatically opens up Camera Raw, correct? When you are done, how do you close it? Do you select Open Image or Done?

If you select Open Image, it should open it up in Photoshop, where you then you will need to do a Save As if you work on it at all in Photoshop. It would default to saving it as a .psd file.

If you hit done, then all of the changes you made in Camera Raw should be in the file when you open it back up. There is an .xml file that is created with all of the changes that you made, and you need to keep the .xml file with the original .NEF file for them to be applied upon opening.

Let me know if you have any questions?
