Opening files

Is there a way to open files where they DO NOT stack across the line tab at the top?  In other words can you open, lets say, 5 files and have the photos appear in the viewing window stacked on top of, or next to one another without having to click on them in the line tab at the top?  Does this make sense?  Thank you for the help.
