Question

Opening RAW images, sometimes tools are different

When I open up RAW images in CS5 Photoshop, sometimes the tools are different.  I've been told that the newer, best tool set are Exposure/Recovery/Fill Light/Blacks/Brightness/Contrast and the older tool set is Exposure/Contrast/Highlights/Shadows/Whites/Blacks.  I process images from two cameras, a Nikon D3 and Nikon 800E, but that's not the problem because two RAW images from the same camera can bring up different RAW tools when opened.

I now prefer using the newer best tool set, but I can't make some images open with that tool set.  Those will always open RAW with the older tool set.

I use three different ways to open a RAW image.  I double click on the image and it automatically opens in Photoshop RAW, or I right click on the image, click on "open".and it opens in Photoshop RAW, or lastly I right click on image and click on "open in RAW".  Usually the image will open in Photoshop RAW with the newer, best tool set.  But sometimes it won't.  I don't know how to make it open consistently.

Would clicking on "Purge Cache for Selection" help me?  Not sure the purpose for that menu option.

Other suggestions?

Thanks,

Bakerxxxxx

Really appreciate the help above even though I'm still struggling with issues on making things work right in Adobe Bridge.

I neglected previously to provide some info and also some info was in error.  When I installed CS6 a few years ago I did not uninstall CS5.  After uninstalling CS5 todayt it appears that I no longer have an issue with the old tools and new tools in jBridge.  Also,  I did learn from DFosse which tools were the newest tools.  Thank you.

Adobe Bridge is now opening up with the correct tools.  HOWEVER, in the process of uninstalling CS5 something happened.  No longer can I open Photoshop by clicking on an image and or right clicking using "open with".

Does this require me to create a new posting to ask for more help?

If not, when I try to open Photoshop in Bridge I'm now getting the following message:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\AdobePhotoshop CS4 (64bit) Photoshop.exe'  Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.

I can backdoor opening images in Photoshop but that is cumbersome and time consuming when processing hundreds of images.

In Bridge I clicked on edit, preferences, I reset default.  I also checked Nikon RAW which indicated Photoshop.  I checked Photoshop document (.psd.psb... and it said Photoshop CS6.

When searching the forums I saw one line discussing how to change the registry for a similar problem.  Not sure if that's the way to go and if the instructions were correct.

Yep. I privately thought of the old Recovery slider as "mud generator" and didn't use it either. My workaround at the time was to stack two smart objects at different exposure settings, and then mask as needed. But the masking process was tricky and time consuming. So it was a monumental relief when I could ditch all that and do it all in one go.

RAW file previously opened in older versions of ACR will open with a little Pling character (Exclamation mark) in the corner of the image.  If you click on that exclamation mark, it will switch to the newer PV2012.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

All the RAW images I am working on are from an event last week so I assume there is no older versions of ACR (whatever that is).  I did find the yellow triangle with exclamation mark on the top right corner that you mentioned.  I clicked on it.  The image got bigger from a few seconds and there was some unseen changes made, but the old tools remained.  I canceled out and clicked on "open" again to see if have behind the scene changes helped.  No change.

I work with CS5 Adobe Bridge and Photoshop to edit and make jpeg copies of each selected RAW files.

You have it wrong. Recovery, Fill Light etc is the old and outdated Process Version 2010.

The new and vastly improved Process Version 2012 has all the sliders centered at 0, labeled Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks.

Just try for yourself and see how much more effective PV2012 is for highlight recovery.
