Overlay set on pattern-filled layer - disappears entirely?

I have an image open. I added a new layer and filled it with a pattern. The pattern has a transparent background and black text. When I set the blending mode to "overlay" all the text disappears completely. Is it because of the transparent background that this is happening? Shouldn't the text still display?

Sorry, not sure how to upload the pattern I'm using (I don't use Photoshop really ever) - but this is the tutorial I followed:

Nothing wrong with the tutorial, but I noticed that your background is white, try changing the blend mode to something like multiply
