Hello. I am trying to overlay an image on top of another image in photoshop 7.0. I can get the 2 images side by side but can't figure out how to do the overlaying. CTRL + J doesn't work either. Thanks

Hi Steve,

Your images are in separate files. To overlay them, the top image needs to be moved into the bottom image so they are in the same file.

What version of Photoshop do you have? I see the File Browser, which has been gone for a long time, and it may change the directions. Try using the Move tool and drag the top image (not the window, but the image itself) onto the lower image.

Hello Jane. I don't know if the images are in separate files or not. They are just saved on the desktop. I can move the top image all over the place, I just can't seem to overlay it. I tried the move tool and it didn't work. I'm using photoshop 7.0. Thanks. Steve

Hi Steve,

Use the big blue Reply button on the first message, not the small black Reply button and you will have an image icon in the top of the message window. The Insert Image button is the second from the right.

Hi Steve,

Are the images in separate documents or on separate layers in the same document?

  • If they are in separate documents, use the Move tool to drag one image into the other document. Add the Shift key to center the image.
  • Now they will be in layers, with one on top of the other. If there is no transparency, the bottom layer will be hidden

Tell us what you are trying to do and post a screenshot, as there are several options from here. Use the big blue Reply button at the top.

Hello Jane. I'm not sure what you mean by separate layers. The move and shift key didn't work. It's just a couple of images on my desktop that I'm trying to overlay one onto the other. I have taken a sceenshot but can't see anywhere to post it on here
