Painting on layer mask not working as it should

Am I going mad? When I paint on a layer mask with a brush I should change the opacity of the mask but I'm getting actual black ow white being painted. WHat the heck have I done?

If you're painting on the mask, yes, it is just black, white, or shades of gray. If you are actually seeing the shades being painted, you most likely don't have the mask selected, and are painting on the actual layer.

I'd guess that you have the thumbnail selected, and not the mask. Look for the white border around one or the other.
