Question

Painting strokes PS is causing lag that catches up???

Hello,

I've been painting in PS for years now. I have never run into this problem until lately. When I am painting strokes on my cintique. All of a sudden PS will freeze. Just lag for like 5 seconds. Then it catches up and generally puts down the stroke but it of course looks like crap and I have to ctrl z. If I attempt to make a brush stroke right after it catches up and puts the stroke down it will again freeze for like 3-5 seconds. So I have to sit after the stroke catches up for about 10 seconds. This happens at some points every 20 seconds. So you can imagine how frustrating it is when your trying to paint something and it gets all laggy. Also my files isn't as large as other files that I haven't had this problem with. I often hit 2GB when doing a very large concept. The file I was just experiencing it on was 760 mb. My computer shouldn't be having a issue with this. So any help or suggestions would be great.

PC Specs - Intel core i7-4790K 4.00 GHz
Ram - 32 GB
GPU - Geforce GTX 1070

Thanks.

Your system spec is OK.  Try turning off Smoothing, or at least see if  Stroke end catch-up is enabled.

It depends on brush size and spacing as to whether lag is coming into it.  Having said that, I can't make mine lag even up to 5000 pixel brush at 1%

Have you tried resetting your Photoshop Preferences> Why did Photoshop Performance change.  Is performance poor with any image documents or  particular document?

I could try resetting my preferences. But I am generally at default. I think I tried increasing my RAM usage for PS earlier when I was looking up fixes. But I just ran into this issue again. It happens with every project. Once I've been working in it for a while it starts up. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the file getting larger? But again my computer should be able to handle it fine. I'm not working billboard size. Doing digital concepts 300DPI at like 4000x2000 pixels. I haven't run into this issue at work. But on my home computer I am fighting with this quite a bit. Although I haven't updated work PS in a while because its been working fine. I have updated here at home.

If one of your Photoshop Preferences have become corrupted it not Adobe's default. Corrupt preferences is such a common problem Adobe added a startup shortcut to reset them and has added a reset on restart button you can use in Edit Preferences.   Brush setting can also cause lag Spacinh 1%, High smoothing....
