Question

Painting with soft brush gives blotchy effect

Hi, I need some help here. I'm painting with a soft brush and it looks blotchy? I've tried adjusting the spacing and it does not help. I also saved the image from my windows computer to look at it on my macbook and it looks the same.

Hi

That looks like color banding. Do you see the same effect in 16 bit mode?

I tried using the same brush in 16-bit and this is what I have. Also I sent the image over from windows desktop to my macbook and I noticed the banding is much less pronounced on my macbook.

I've edited your screen shot so we can see what is going on

The thing is, there are brush presets designed to give precisely that sort of effect, so we can't possibly say if there is a problem without seeing the brush preset you are using.  If it was a plain vanilla round brush and fully soft, then we would not expect to see this.

Show us some information about the preset you are using, and we'll take it from there.  A screen shot like this for instance.  Just copy to the clipboard, and paste directly to this thread.

I'm using the default soft round brush with opacity, the only thing I tweaked was the spacing.

A soft brush will look blotchy where the stroke overlap each other because the edges of the soft brush are semi-transparent. If you want a smooth fill you can simply select an area, choose the color you want, and fill it with a solid color. (Edit > Fill).

Thank you for replying! Is there a way to paint with the soft brush and not have this effect?

The soft edge brush can be used without having that effect if you do the complete fill without releasing your mouse. That is, you'd need to press down with the mouse, fill in the whole area, and then release the mouse.

Also, in the Options bar, make sure that flow is set to 100%.
