Pasting a copied subpath keeps replacing all other other subpaths

In order to be able to add a subpath to an existing shape layer, every time I go to paste, I have to *either* select some other layer and re-select the shape layer in the Layers pallete, or I have to make sure that all the already existing subpaths in that layer are selected.
